Nikka from the barrel tasting notes

Couleur : vieil or à reflets dorés.Nez : fin, complexe. - Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot picked between 3 and 18 October at 39 hectoliters per hectare for estate (therefore the Grand Vin will be less). It is matured in 80% new oak and 20% one year old for 18 months. It has a very intense, extremely pure bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, cedar and graphite notes; it is a straight-down-the-fairway Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with a very tensile opening, that seam of graphite penetrating the black fruit. There is a wonderful structure here, unapologetically classic in style with just the right amount of austerity on the aristocratic finish. The aftertaste is incredibly long, lingering after two or three minutes in the mouth. This is a majestic Pichon-Baron and it may well to surpass both the 2009 or 2010 - Neal MartinThe 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 is one of the best recent Pichon-Barons I can remember tasting. Smoke, gravel, chocolate, graphite, licorice, leather, black cherry and grilled herbs open up first as the wine shows off its extraordinary aromatic palette. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2016 delivers serious flavor intensity, but with no excess weight. The richness of the Cabernet, at 85% of the blend, is palpable, as is the quality level. Vivid and deep to the core, the wine finishes with notable density, yet retains its midweight structure. - Antonio Galloni(85 Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 Merlot) 80% new oak 13.3% alc. 84 IPT Very dense and firm, but not overly tannic, this is a super-cassis vintage for Pichon Baron with gentle extraction really benefiting this wine. Long, fresh and calm, this is a wine that is built on the slightly smaller Cabernet berries than normal thanks to the hot summer and this gives it a very dark, smooth, vortex of fruit at its core. The result is a wine which I feel will sit side by side with the 2015 in years to come showing two fascinating vintages with equal flair and integrity. 18.5+ - Matthew JukesThis has some rich liquorice and gingerbread flavours, drawing deeply on the cassis fruits of the 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. This is incredibly dense and yet feels almost light across the palate. It doesn't have the upfront sexiness of the 2009, this is a more cerebral vintage. Neither does it have the architecture of the 2010, although the technical numbers are quite similar with high tannins and a pH of 3.6. It floats and builds up power slowly, with slightly chalky tannins on the finish. Less of a 'wall' than some recent years, an excellent wine. 45% of the estate's production from 73ha. To be aged in 80% new oak for 18 months. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050 - Jane Anson85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot. 80% new oak. 45% of total production. Dense, dramatic, splashy wine with great balance and lift. Lots of energy and masses of old Cab in here. Really snazzy. Long. - Jancis RobinsonBarrel Sample. This is a sumptuous wine, its black fruit tones surrounding ripe tannins. It is generous in acidity as well as an open ripe-fruit character. It is concentrated and obviously designed to age well; drink from 2024. - Roger VossHas the pure, fresh, racy feel of the vintage, which is even more admirable considering the depth of the red currant, plum and cherry preserve flavors at the core and the power of the structure on the back end, pulling in accents of graphite and loam. A thumper of a Pauillac.-J.M. - James MolesworthI have been waiting for this for a long time. It's a remake of the legendary 1990 Pichon Baron. Full body, ultra-polished yet powerful tannins and a glorious finish. The will evolve beautifully. The core of fruit and tannins are great. A truly great Pichon Baron. - James Suckling

- Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot and 39% Merlot, less Cabernet this year because of the size of the berries. I tasted the wine on two visits to the property around two weeks apart, plus additional tastings at négoçiants. It has an intense bouquet with layers of blackberry, sloes and fresh mint, just a hint of black truffle in the background. It is certainly a little more opulent compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, a little spicier than I expected (in a positive sense) with gentle grip in the mouth. It fans out with confidence, a voluminous Pontet-Canet with an extremely persistent aftertaste, and a saline and balsamic finish. This is an extravagant Pauillac for the vintage that will age over many years. - Neal MartinThe 2016 Pontet-Canet has been absolutely brilliant on the three occasions I've tasted it so far. Exotically ripe, powerful and voluptuous, it brings together the richness of the 2009 with the structure of the 2010. There aren't too many other 2016s where that is the case, but it is undoubtedly true here. The 2016 is a spectacular wine by any measure, while Pontet-Canet confirms its rarefied place as a true original in Bordeaux. Technical director Jean-Michel Comme added that Cabernet Sauvignon plays a slightly lesser role in the blend because the berries had less juice than normal at harvest. Comme also bumped up the new oak slightly, to 55 percent. The rest of the wine was aged in neutral oak (10 percent) and amphora (35 percent). In a word: Superb. Tasted three times. - Antonio GalloniThis is richly layered with seductively ripe fruit. The quality and texture of the brambled blackberries, cassis and bilberries is striking. There is a sense of lightness and juiciness but also depth and flesh - you can feel the joy of that contrast at every step as the wine stretches out in front of you, hard to resist. 2016 is another vintage where they are up at 95%+ of grand vin, this year aged in 55% new casks, 10% in one year old casks and 35% in amphorae. Feel the effects of biodynamics make Pontet Canet stand out for its energy and lush tannins, even with the concentration of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050 - Jane Anson(60 Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 Merlot, 4 Cabernet Franc, 1 Petit Verdot) 13.5% alc. 34hl/ha. - and this is 1 hl/ha. over the average over the last ten years, too, and there is no green harvest here either - making it possibly unique in Bordeaux. This is an exceedingly rich and decadent Pontet-Canet on the nose, and there is masses of power and amplitude on the palate, too. The fruit is dense, bold, layered and sophisticated and the class and breeding is very plain to see. This is a staggering tour de force for this Château. The balance between modern fruit intensity and fascinating antique flavours is unique. 19.5+ - Matthew JukesThis is richly layered with seductively ripe fruit. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050 - Jane AnsonPicked 28 September to 12 October. Director Jean-Michel Comme says maybe a bit earlier than some. I'm not sure. They've been biodynamic for 12 years but 2007 was so bad that they had to abandon status. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. 34 hl/ha - reduced to that from spring pruning. Very dark crimson. More savoury and sumptuous than many of its neighbours. Blackberry compote and very round and rich and satiny. Very round. Almost too sweet but that is to complain needlessly. Already rich and enjoyable but masses of tannins too. Long and throbbing. Excellent with freshness and cleanliness and round. Pretty sweet though so it's a definite style. - Jancis RobinsonBarrel Sample. This wine is so dense and concentrated, with magnificent fruit. The tannins are velvety, but, at the same time, the wine has a dry side that will allow it to age so well. Juicy blackberries and great tannins work in harmony. The estate is in its seventh vintage certified biodynamic. - Roger VossVivid and full of energy with blackberry, currant and salt. Full body, intense and long. Harmony. Purpose. Classicism. The mineral and currant character is all year. A seamless tannin texture. Great wine. You want to drink it now! - James Suckling

- Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Bouscaut was tasted on two or three occasions and like some other wines from Pessac-Léognan, it felt just a little blowsy on the nose with some very ripe Merlot that just detracted from the precision and delineation. The palate is actually better with firm and quite robust tannin, saline and quite masculine (unlike the aromatics) with good definition in the finish. There is some new oak to be subsumed here and it may just dominate the fruit, however, Bouscaut often pulls itself together during the barrel maturation and ends up winning over tastebuds. Therefore I will be an optimist, though would warn that this 2016 will benefit from two or three years in bottle at least. - La Revue du Vin de FranceI'm impressed with both colours of Bouscaut this year, but the red is the clear winner. Good firm tannins and some contemporary cocoa dusting, combined with a juicy finish. It really does have a luscious quality, just the right side of indulgently rich. Good, medium term drinking. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040 - Jane AnsonDark purple. Very rich, sweet nose. Super-flattering; maybe just a little too sweet for perfectionists but there is masses of pleasure to be had here. Château La Gaffelière 1er grand cru classé - Saint Emilion The 2016 Canon la Gaffeliere is a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (vines organically certified) picked from 26 September to 15 October and matured in 60% new oak. The yield is 42 hectoliters per hectare. This offers one of the most cerebral aromatics that I have encountered from this Saint Emilion estate: mineral-rich red and black fruit, quite edgy, almost flinty in style. I adore the focus of these aromas that are wired directly into the olfactory senses. The palate is very well balanced and governed by the Cabernet component. The black fruit is lifted by some lovely graphite notes that lend it a very Left Bank-like personality. It is fresh, taut and linear with a very persistent finish. Unlike other vintages of Canon la Gaffelière, I feel that this will require four to five years in bottle. As good as the 2015 last year, it might even surpass it. - Neal MartinDark crimson. Very rich sweet nose slightly reminiscent of the 'modernist' style. Rather thick and heavy. Suffers from being tasted immediately after the superior and sophisticated Ch Canon. Rather drying end. Good effort. Sincere but a tad vieux jeu. Hint of meatiness, then slightly drying tannins but good energy. - Jancis RobinsonThis pulls a lot of red and black currant, fig and boysenberry pâte de fruit notes together, wraps them with a brambly thread and then drives them through an anise- and apple wood-edged finish. It's all tightly wound, but it's all there for the long haul. Really, really solid.-J.M. - James MolesworthLovely silky texture and dark fruit to this wine underlining richness and decadence. Medium to full body and a long finish. - James Suckling

- Jean-Marc QuarinThe 2016 Clos Fourtet is a blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new oak. It has a generous, well defined licorice-tinged fruit that is very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, blackberry and boysenberry fruit with that salted licorice theme continuing. This Clos Fourtet has impressive concentration, yet there is real elegance and persistence, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. Mathieu Cuvelier has overseen another outstanding Clos Fourtet. Tasted twice, with a second bottle demonstrating a tad more backbone but equally admirable. - Neal Martin Vivid, creamy, ample and explosive in all of its dimensions, the 2016 Clos Fourtet maintains striking aromatic freshness and tension despite its intensity. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The final blend is 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. The 2016 spent about four weeks on the skins. New oak is around 60 percent. This is a superb showing from an estate that has been on a roll. Tasted three times. - Antonio GalloniThis showcases why Clos Fourtet is such a confident, powerful wine. It gets the balance right between the sappy, saline quality of its limestone terroir and yet reflects the ripeness and flashiness of Merlot that makes St-Émilion such a well loved appellation. Excellent, serious quality, cerebral but sexy. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050 - Jane AnsonBarrel Sample. This wine is full of ripe fruit, starting on the nose and following through to the structured palate. It's an imposing wine from an estate that seems at the top of its form. It should age well for many years. - Roger VossGorgeous from the get-go, with plum sauce, cassis and violet notes streaming through, showing ample richness yet relying more on cut, while anise, black tea and chalky mineral flavors persist on the finish. A beauty in the making.-J.M. - James MolesworthThis is a solid and structured 2016 with fabulous density and freshness. Full body yet vibrant and exciting. Wow. Fabulous tannins.

- Wein WisserThe 2016 Gruaud Larose is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc this year, picked between 29 September until 15 October (with the Petit Verdot) and matured in 80% new oak, the remainder one or two years old. The alcohol is a modest 13.02%. It has a generous bouquet with scents of blackberry, briary, a touch of sandalwood and tobacco, gaining more precision as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, certainly one of the most finessed Gruaud Larose in recent years, with perfectly judged acidity. I love the focus here, a little understated at first but you cannot deny the intensity and precision on the finish. Moreover, this seems to be a slightly more detailed Gruaud, nuanced and long in the mouth. Excellent-and I suspect it might be a little more approachable than some of its peers. - Neal MartinA balanced, measured, incredibly tight delivery of the triumvirate of tannins, fruit and acidity. - Bettane & Desseauve69 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 % Merlot, 2 % Cabernet Franc, 13 vol %. Ausbau in 80 % neuen Barriquesfür 18-24 Monate. Bravo ! - Jean-Marc QuarinBranaire-Ducru is gorgeous in 2016. A rush of inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, violet, lavender and dark spices give the wine its rich, textured feel. Gracious and nuanced, in the classic Branaire style, the 2016 possesses lovely depth and sensuality, with no hard edges and terrific overall balance. Time in the glass brings out the wine's more floral and spiced notes. Above all else, Branaire is a wine of finesse despite its considerable intensity. It is also arguably the most polished of the Saint-Juliens. Tasted two times. - Antonio Galloni(64 Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 Merlot, 6 Petit Verdot, 3 Cabernet Franc) 13.5% alc. 60% new oak A brilliant Branaire and one of the most shocking and memorable wines of the week, there are stunning aromatics here and a huge finish. This is a triumph for this estate and I love the way it gives the illusion of being a richer wine but it is a focussed, epically balanced creation. The nose is heroic and this alone warrants a huge score. That the finish is also sublime makes this one of the hidden gems of the Left Bank in 2016. 18.5+ - Matthew JukesAlways a supremely elegant, measured take on St-Julien that delivers in spades in 2016. Bonne longueur. - Jean-Marc QuarinThe nose is more exciting than the palate which dries up and finishes abruptly, but this will soften in a short period of time and offer a straightforward Haut-Médoc. 15.5 - Matthew JukesDark deep crimson. - Jean-Marc QuarinThe 2016 Camensac is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, picked from 27 September until 18 October at 42 hectoliters per hectare. There is a pastille-like purity on the nose: blackberry, briary and a light floral note coming through with time. The quality of the vintage shows through on the palate, which is very harmonious and demonstrates both excellent backbone and intensity. It builds in the mouth, maintaining plenty of freshness and with a mineral-driven finish. This is an excellent Château de Camensac and fingers crossed it will represent great value in the market once released. - Neal MartinA lovely Camensac full of plush, sculpted tannins and a ripple of cassis fruit. This closes down a little on the finish; maybe the fruit isn't quite pushing through the entire length of the wine and could do with being a little denser, but the tarry edge to the oak gives a sense of ambition and there is plenty to enjoy here. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040 - Jane Anson Hint of pencil shavings on the nose. Then ripe fruit but it could do with a little more lift. And on the palate the phenolics are a bit underripe. - Jancis RobinsonA tangy and dense red with plum, chocolate and berry character. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. - Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Cantemerle has a tightly wound bouquet and it never quite delivers the detail and mineralité that some of its peers have produced in this vintage. There are attractive undergrowth scents and a touch of tobacco, but it does not leap from the glass with joy. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good depth of fruit, blackberry laced with cedar and graphite. One sample was missed a little precision, however, a second and third demonstrated much more precision and tension. My score reflects this. - Neal Martin Couleur sombre, intense, aux reflets noirs. Bonne longueur sèveuse. - Jean-Marc QuarinThe 2016 Cantemerle comes across as raw and not fully put together. Even so, the wine possesses superb richness, volume and depth. Voici les notes et avis de quelques experts internationaux : This is an elegant and beautifully balanced wine with plush damson aromatics and a punch of fruit that is totally captivating. The soft but extensive tannins of 2016 are fully on display, lush and well-worked. There is some charcoal and liquorice sitting underneath, with the wet stone minerality that always elevates a wine up to the next level. Very good. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050 - Jane AnsonPurpurgranat. - Wein WisserThe 2016 Cantenac Brown comes from a Margaux estate that has upped its game in recent years. It has an intense bouquet with floral aromas filtering through the black cherries, cassis and boysenberry notes, in an odd way almost Saint-Emilion in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. Silky smooth with very well-judged acidity, there is a sorbet-like freshness imbued into this Margaux and it just glides across the palate towards the quite sensual finish. This is certainly equal to the impressive 2015 Cantenac Brown. - Neal MartinBarrel Sample. Yes, this is firmly tannic and densely structured, but it's also a ripe wine, packed with fruit. The acidity is classic for this vintage, giving the wine excellent aging potential. - Roger VossFocused, with a light brambly frame around the juicy plum and blackberry fruit. - Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Lascombes has a decadent, but pure bouquet with layers of black cherry and blueberry fruit, the new oak conspicuous and (as usual) quite glossy and extroverted in style. The palate is very ripe with saturated tannin, bold and extravagant with a voluminous middle of blackberry, graphite and blue fruit. There is a powerful and heady finish; what it just lacks is finesse and that sense of personality. I tasted this Margaux on several occasions and it was one of the most variable samples, hence the question mark against my score. - Neal MartinThe 2016 Lascombes is done in a very modern, pushed style, with plenty of inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice and heavy torrefaction notes. It's hard to see any expression of site here. The 2016 is well made from a purely technical standpoint, but it is also not at all exciting. At this level, a wine should aspire to more. There is little doubt that Lascombes is the most anonymous wine being made in Margaux today. - Antonio Galloni Some beautiful aromatics going on here, this has the sexy, ripe focus that is a signature of this property under consultant Michel Rolland and director Dominique Befve. It doesn't disappoint, and as ever for me it conveys a sense of joy and vibrancy in the fruit. The blend in 2016 is 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, from a yield of 45hl/ha. There is deep black pepper and cinammon spicing, and while the tannins are a little tight it has clear oak structure. A lovely wine that is a strong successor to the excellent 2015. Drinking Window 2027 - 2045 - Jane AnsonBarrel Sample. This is full of fruit, a change of style for this estate. The result is a wine that is rich and smooth, as well as concentrated and firmly tannic. - Roger VossSolidly built, with a note of baker's chocolate adding heft to the mix of plum and blackberry fruit. Velvety, but showing persistent grip through the finish.-J.M. - James MolesworthFull, focused and precise with dark berries, intensely fine tannins and a fresh finish. Medium to full body and a persistent finish. More refined than in the past, yet it remains very well structured.

Bonne longueur. - Jean-Marc QuarinThe nose is more exciting than the palate which dries up and finishes abruptly, but this will soften in a short period of time and offer a straightforward Haut-Médoc. 15.5 - Matthew JukesDark deep crimson. Rather appealing, fresh nose with plenty of ripeness too. Savoury and rather bloody but without the concentration of a great wine. Easy for relatively early drinking. A little drying on the end. - Jancis RobinsonBarrel Sample. Under the same ownership as Château la Dominique in Saint-Emilion, this estate has produced here a smooth wine, with great tannins and a dense structure. It has weight along with acidity and a crisp aftertaste. - Roger VossVery fresh, with ebullient black cherry and plum compote flavors, lined with anise and singed apple wood notes. Reveals a flash of iron through the finish.-J.M. - James MolesworthFull body, ripe and dense fruit, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. A solid young wine from here.

Fresh bay and singed juniper notes line the finish. Nicely integrated and showing solid range. Well done.-J.M. - James MolesworthA young red with lovely density and richness defined by currant and light coffee-bean character. Medium to full body and lightly chewy tannins. Lots here in the glass.

- Bettane & DesseauveThe 2016 Haut Marbuzet has exactly the kind of bouquet you expect from this Saint Estephe owned by the Duboscq family: decadent and very ripe red berry fruit intermixed with kirsch and crème de cassis. Fortunately, it delivers all this ripeness with satisfying freshness and detail. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, plenty of concentrated black fruit tinged with tobacco and white pepper. All it is missing is just a little more persistent on the aftertaste, but otherwise, this is no more, no less than an absolutely delicious Saint-Estèphe that will give 20-25 years of drinking pleasure. No other wine from the appellation this year will give you so much joy. - Neal MartinThe 2016 Haut-Marbuzet is a wild, powerful, eccentric wine. There is a lot going on in the glass, although the elements are not especially well put together at this stage. Pungent red fruit, blood orange, pomegranate and floral notes are all pushed forward. Beams of firm yet well-integrated tannins give the wine much of its energy and drive. There is quite a bit of potential here, especially if the wine finds a bit more balance during its aging. As is often the case, Haut-Marbuzet is one of the most distinctive wines of Saint-Estèphe. - Antonio GalloniThe Duboscq family are part of the old guard of the Médoc. This wine delivers deep, rich cassis and liquorice alongside some attractive charcoal; flavours that are clearly prepared for some long ageing. Firm tannins exert their influence, and the acidity is a touch more marked than in some. It is more vertically constructed than many in St-Estèphe this year - it is a serious, well built wine that could do with a few years in bottle. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040 - Jane AnsonBarrel Sample. The structure of this wine is firm, in a classic Saint-Estèphe style. Yet at the same time, the fruit is so generous, with a ripe layer of black currants and contrasting acidity. - Roger VossTangy and energetic with a mineral, dried-lemon and dark-berry character. Full body and chewy tannins. All here. - James Suckling

Bravo! - Wein WisserThe 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot picked between 4-21 October at 45 hectoliters per hectare, and matured in 35% new oak. Oh yes! This is a perfumed bouquet that unfolds beautifully in the glass with blackberry, cedar, smoke and a light marine influence, not unlike Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with such fine tannins that it bought to mind Burgundy rather than Bordeaux. There is a grainy texture here, quite saline in the mouth with an entrancing sense of symmetry, very classic but not austere on the finish, with a long and saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Domaine de Chevalier from the busiest man in Bordeaux, Oliver Bernard. Tasted twice with consistent notes. - Neal MartinThe 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a wine of total precision and class. Today, the flavors are remarkably primary, while the tannins, unusually, are totally buried by the fruit. It will be many years before the 2016 is ready to show all of its cards, but it is a brilliant wine in the making. Dark red cherry, blood orange, mint, white pepper and rose petal infuse the strikingly delineated, vibrant finish. - Antonio GalloniBarrel Sample. Mint aromas and flavors signal the new wood in which this wine is aging. It has impressive fruit, opulent and dense, balanced by fine acidity, crisp edges and solid tannins. A serious wine that will last for a long time. - Roger VossIntense raspberry and boysenberry fruit drives along, flecked with anise hints and scored with roasted apple wood details. A touch toothy on the finish, with a loamy note, but the fruit takes an encore, which is a great sign for the future.-J.M. - James MolesworthA dense and tight DC with mineral, crushed stone, and cement and black currant. Full, tight and racy. Gorgeous. Leafs and tobacco undertones. Very tannic. Tight So strucured. Complex.
